Traditional clay cat litter is all many cat owners know – they don’t realize there is an alternative or even a reason to consider one. The fact of the matter is that many commercial cat litters contain large amounts of silica dust which can trigger respiratory issues in cats and humans.

Commercial cat litters also frequently contain chemical fragrances and other additives that can irritate your cat’s sensitive nose and skin.

The problem with many alternative litters is that they don’t stand up against clay litter in terms of performance for things like clumping action and odor control. If you’re looking for a natural alternative to clay litter that still offers similar benefits for clumping and odor control, sWheat Scoop is definitely one to consider.

Brand Overview

The sWheat Scoop brand got its start in 1994 when a local Minnesota family set out to create an alternative to clay cat litter. The result was sWheat Scoop, the first all-natural cat litter on the market.

A full 25 years later, the company calls itself “Mother Nature’s cat litter” and continues to be farmer-owned and farmer-grown. This brand is dedicated to providing pet parents with healthy, natural products to give their cats the best life possible.

As an all-natural cat litter, sWheat Scoop saves pet parents from worrying about the harmful effects of clay and silica dust.

By combining their knowledge of sustainable farming practices and natural product development, the sWheat Scoop company continues to develop innovative products that would make Mother Nature herself proud.

sWheat Scoop cat litter uses natural wheat enzymes and starches to enhance clumping and lock away odors. In fact, all of sWheat Scoop’s ingredients are biodegradable and come from renewable resources so everything they take from the earth can go right back into it.

What Kinds of Litter Does the Brand Offer?

The sWheat Scoop brand currently offers three different cat litter formulas. Each recipe uses the natural goodness of wheat to eliminate unpleasant litter box odors. Thanks to the use of Noble Ion Technology, the brand’s proprietary odor-eliminating technology, all three formulas are new and improved, designed to provide long-lasting odor control.

Every ingredient is biodegradable, flushable, and made from renewable resources so everything that is taken from the earth can go right back into the ground.

The three formulas sWheat Scoop has to offer are fast-clumping, multi-cat, and premium+. Every formula is made from all-natural wheat without any chemical dyes, perfumes, or other harmful ingredients. Two of the three are multi-cat friendly, and all of them offer strong clumping action to lock away odors and make cleaning the litter box quick and easy.

The three formulas we’re reviewing here are the only three formulas sWheat Scoop has to offer.

Formulated specifically for multi-cat homes, this sWheat Scoop formula offers two-times more powerful odor elimination and clumping than the original recipe.

Thanks to the brand’s innovative Noble Ion Technology, the all-natural wheat materials are infused with a liquid containing billions of positive ions that neutralize the negative ions found in litter box odor. Odor is eliminated quickly and naturally without the use of artificial fragrances that do little more than mask the smell.

As a multi-cat formula, this cat litter is designed to clump quickly and firmly to lock away urine odor on contact. The natural wheat ingredients neutralize odors for long-lasting protection, even in multiple cat homes.

What several customer reviews have noted, however, is that the subtle natural scent of the wheat materials creates an unpleasant combination when exposed to urine. With frequent scooping, it shouldn’t be a problem, but some cat owners may find it more noticeable than others.

In testing this cat litter, we found that it stood up to its promise of being very low dust and it had no noticeable scent other than a slight natural smell. The litter absorbed liquid quickly and formed clumps, though we found some litter stuck to the bottom of the pan when we emptied it.

We also found that the clumps didn’t become quite as hard as clay litter, and some fell apart during scooping. Overall, however, it performed well for a natural cat litter.

  • Completely natural, free from artificial fragrance and dyes

Cons of this sWheat Scoop Cat Litter:

  • Doesn’t clump as hard as some litters, clumps may break apart
  • May have an unpleasant smell when urine combines with wheat materials

This litter comes in a 12-pound, 25-pound, and 36-pound bag. This particular formula is made from natural wheat materials instead of clay, so it is more lightweight than the average litter.

If you visit the sWheat Scoop website and check their product comparison chart, you’ll see that the fast-clumping recipe is the new original formula. It has been improved with added odor control and fast-clumping power, but it is the lowest of the three levels, with Premium+ being the highest.

This sWheat Scoop Natural Fast-Clumping Wheat Cat Litter is designed for single cat households and, like the other two recipes, is made entirely from natural materials with no chemicals, dyes, or perfumes. It is still powered by Noble Ion Technology for odor elimination and clumps quickly to ensure that benefit. This formula is very low dust which is a bonus, though some customer reviews comment that it tracks a fair bit. It offers similar clumping action to the other two formulas, with some clumps remaining somewhat soft and breaking apart during scooping.

In terms of odor control, it is important to remember that this is a single-cat formula. It controls feces odor fairly well when it is covered, but urine odor tends to combine in an unpleasant way with the wheat materials. Frequent scooping can help control these odors but, generally speaking, this formula is not as effective as some natural litters we’ve tried in terms of long-lasting odor control.

The top-tier formula offered by sWheat Scoop, this Premium+ formula is made from the same all-natural materials, making it both flushable and biodegradable. This formula is completely free from harsh ingredients including chemical dyes and perfumes, but it does have a slight natural scent to it.

It is designed for multiple cat households, relying on Noble Ion Technology to deliver long-lasting odor control. It also has 3 times the clumping power of the other two formulas.

In testing this formula, we found that the clumping power was a bit stronger than the previous recipes, though some clumps still fell apart in scooping. We also found some litter sticking to the pan when we emptied it.

In terms of mess, the litter is otherwise very good. It is very low dust when pouring and scooping the litter, though there is some tracking because the granules are very lightweight. Overall, it is a decent litter but doesn’t seem to be significantly better than the other two formulas.

Positive Customer Reviews for sWheat Scoop Cat Litter

I have been a catmom since childhood, I’m into my 40’s now. Been there, done that when it comes to kitty litter evolution. Currently, I have nine cats that share their home with me because they need me to scoop and to open the cans. This kitty litter has everything going for it right out of the bag. I ordered a 25 pounder to start in a couple of the boxes. The bag has a HANDLE on the side to help you pour! The bag is resealable once opened. And it’s recyclable once its emptied. Tiny, minuscule amount of dust when I first filled the boxes, but no dust while the cats do their business or when the human cleaning crew comes later. I have asthma, so that’s a big deal right there. The clumps sift easily from the clean and so far, it does not track like the scoopable clay I’ve been using.”

Tuffie, reviewing sWheat Scoop Multi-Cat Natural Wheat Cat Litter

“We have two Maine Coon kittens and searched for an alternative to clay litter. I can’t stand the smell even before they use the litter box. I discovered this, and it has no initial odor beyond a sort of clean scent and best of all this on the bottom with the fluffy Feline Pine on the top holds down odor much better than clay. It clumps very well, so is easy to scoop.”

Arowens, reviewing sWheat Scoop Natural Fast-Clumping Wheat Cat Litter

“I’ve had many cats over the years and have always bought traditional litter. When looking into litter for our newly adopted kitten (we only have one cat now) I wanted something more natural and less dusty. Even with the negative reviews, I still wanted to give this litter a chance. The only complaint I have is it really doesn’t clump. The premium+ clumps better than the blue bag, but neither really do. The litter box never smells of use, but every now and then we’ll smell the litter itself. It can have a weird odor, but it’s not anything that makes me want to go back to traditional litter.”

Negative Customer Reviews for sWheat Scoop Cat Litter

“I have been using a different clumping product and started with the sWheat product by adding a little at a time to allow our 2 cats to get use to the change. When I had a mix of about 1/3rd sWheat the cats stopped using the box. It went on for two days until we noticed a smell. One cat was urinating, but not defecating in the box, the other was not using it at all. We haven’t figured out where they are peeing yet, and the house smells pretty bad. It may be that other cats love this stuff, but our cats do not.”

– Dennis, reviewing sWheat Scoop Multi-Cat Natural Wheat Cat Litter

“I switched from a corn-based litter to this wheat one because I was suspicious that my cat is allergic to the corn litter. I really wanted to like this litter, but it just wasn’t working. First off, the litter tracks everywhere, the worst I have experienced. The litterbox is downstairs, but I will find litter on the second floor. It also is not very good with odor control. The only thing I liked is that the litter is in a resealable bag, and its flushable litter. I think all litter should come in a resealable bag.”

Xheyitzmex, reviewing sWheat Scoop Natural Fast-Clumping Wheat Cat Litter

“I am still trying to find the best kitty litter. But this is NOT it. It does not clump and sticks to the bottom of the litter box. And just totally makes a mess out of litter box as it does not clump well. And my Cat does not like a messy litter box. I bought 2 big bags and will use them up. But will most definitely be looking for a new litter. And it is NOT inexpensive. Very disappointed in this litter. And thinking for what I paid it should be a good one. I would NOT recommend this litter to my worst enemy.”

How Much Does sWheat Scoop Cat Litter Cost?

Natural cat litters tend to cost more than traditional clay litter, but that doesn’t mean clay litters can’t be expensive.

In fact, sWheat Scoop is priced similar to some of the mid-range clay litters we’ve reviewed. All three formulas are priced between $0.75 and $1.00 per pound when you purchase the largest size. You can save even more by buying online with an auto-ship discount.

Overall, is sWheat Scoop Cat Litter a Good Choice?

We can’t say that sWheat Scoop performs as well as some of the natural cat litters we’ve tried, but it does offer some unique benefits that make it worth trying. The fact that it is flushable and biodegradable is a major bonus, and it is also very lightweight and, generally speaking, very affordable. It could be better for odor control, but with frequent scooping, it does just fine.

One thing to be mindful of with this brand is that while some of the recipes are marketed for multiple cat homes, the odor-fighting power may be reduced if you have more than one cat using the litter box. At the very least, you’ll need to scoop the box more frequently to keep the litter fresh. Make sure to provide one litter box per cat with at least one extra.

All three of sWheat Scoop’s formulas are biodegradable and flushable. This makes your job of cleaning the litter box much easier – you should also be able to use a standard litter scoop with this litter. Many cat owners like to keep their litter box in the bathroom so they can quickly and easily scoop directly from the box into the toilet for disposal.

Where is sWheat Scoop Cat Litter Sold?

sWheat Scoop Cat Litter is sold online and in pet stores. You can find it for sale from online retailers like Chewy and Amazon as well as big box stores like Walmart and Target as well as local and national pet stores such as PetSmart and Petco.
