Cats.com are in constant search for feline inspiration across the web and this time we have something really cool for you guys, Dan and Kellie Akers are behind a new innovating litter box called “The Grate Litter Box” . So we caught up with Dan and Kellie to hear more about what appears to be a project we should definitely pay attention to in the near future.

Q1: Please introduce yourself to our community

We’re Dan and Kellie Akers, we met in high school and have been married for 28 years. We have three daughters and live in Silverthorne, Colorado. Dan is a chimney sweep by trade and Kellie an accountant. We love our pets and believe in the motto “Adopt, Don’t Shop.” We have two dogs and three cats, four of which were adopted from our local animal shelter.

Q2: How did you come up with this idea?

We took our three daughters to the local animal shelter to get a cat and ended up coming home with three! We quickly learned how messy having three cats could be and our dogs quickly learned of the “treats” left behind in the litter box for them.

We didn’t mind cleaning the boxes but hated the mess that was tracked throughout our house. We had litter tracked across our floors and even in our bed! We tried numerous boxes and mats that said they helped with litter scatter but nothing worked for us or our cats.

Since we couldn’t find anything that worked for us, we did a little brainstorming and built a litter box that has proven amazing at stopping the spread of litter.

Q3: How did you come up with the name?

We had a family competition. It was a lot of fun and Dan won!

Q4: What are the benefits of your product?

The number one benefit is the grate and drawer that together significantly reduce litter scatter, keeping our house so much cleaner. It also has high walls to prevent urine overspray. There’s a hook to hang the scoop inside the box and a housing for a charcoal filter (if desired). There are windows for easy viewing and venting of the litter area. A partition wall also helps deter dogs from reaching those “treats.”

Q5: How can I get one?

Initially we’ll be launching a Kickstarter campaign in July. To be one of the first notified of our launch, visit our website at www.TheGrateLitterBox.com/contact-us, fill out the form and we’ll keep you updated!

Q6: Where can we get more information?

You can visit us on our website at www.TheGrateLitterBox.com or come see us at SuperZoo in Las Vegas, August 20 – 22, 2019, booth 752.

Q6: Any last words?

This project has become a family affair and we love having everyone involved in the process. We’re so excited to have the opportunity to bring our Grate Litter Box to market and appreciate all of the support we’ve received!
