The Cat Fanciers Association has released its list of 2017’s most popular cat breeds – and the results might surprise you.

Since 1906, the CFA has been dedicated to preserving and promoting purebred cats while also advocating for the wellbeing of all cats. The association is the world’s largest registry of pedigreed cats, giving them a unique understanding of the most popular cat breeds.

In March, the CFA released its list of the most popular cat breeds in 2017. These rankings are based on cat registrations between January 1st, 2017 and December 31st of the same year.

The Top 5 Most Popular Cat Breeds

1. Exotic Shorthair

The Exotic takes the number one spot for the fourth year in a row. This breed bears the distinctive flat face of a Persian paired with a low-maintenance short coat. These cats are known for their affectionate, gentle personalities.

2. Ragdoll

This breed gets its name from its tendency to go limp like a ragdoll in your arms. Fluffy, blue-eyed Ragdolls are at once loving, intelligent, trainable, and playful.

3. British Shorthair

British Shorthair cats are short, sturdy, and well-rounded in every sense of the word. They have round eyes, round heads, and densely-muscled bodies. Their personalities are initially reserved but later gentle and loving. They’re easy-going cats who make an elegant and calming addition to the home.

4. Persian

One of the most distinctive breeds in the world, the Persian has a snub nose that makes them the feline equivalent of the pug dog. These sweet, cuddly cats are described as the “epitome of lap cats” and take life at a slow pace, seldom jumping or climbing. Their long coats require regular care to prevent tangling and matting.

5. Maine Coon

These American cats make a big impact. They’re large in every way with huge, fluffy paws, tufted ears, and are some of the longest cats in the world. They’re intelligent, trainable, and make great family pets.
